Episode Synopsis

When a gay man is murdered, seemingly the latest victim of a string of hate crimes, Brenda must confront prejudices inside and out of the LAPD. But when the perpetrator of the crimes turns out to be something quite different than expected, and has an alibi for the latest murder, Brenda must dig deeper to discover if this crime is part of the string, or a crime of passion disguised as a hate crime.

Meanwhile, Flynn and Taylor step up their efforts to undermine Brenda once again, but with unexpected effects, as the team begins to rally around Brenda. Provenza's quirks begin to emerge, and we meet Terrence Hynes, a County Coroner's Forensics Support worker with an odd sense of humor. On the home front, Brenda finds herself with some new charges when her (male) Kitty has kittens.

Episode Background and Trivia

This is the first appearance by Robert Clendenin as Terrence Hynes. Though never specifically identified, Hynes most likely works in the LA County Coroner's Forensic Support department. The Los Angeles County Coroner's office has its own forensics unit, handling a wide range of tasks including histology, gunshot residue analysis, DNA testing and postmortem toxicology. Forensic support includes preparation of bodies for autopsy, assistance during autopsy, and dental/fingerprint analysis for identification.

The gay couple at the center of this story were characterized as domestic partners under California Law. Better know as AB205, The California Domestic Partners Rights and Responsibilities Act of 2003, this law allows same sex-couples to register as domestic partners. By doing so, they are guaranteed a range of rights typically reserved to married couples, including community property rights, tax benefits, parental rights, and health-care rights.

The small blue box Pope gives Brenda is from Tiffany and Co. jewelers. Among the most exclusive, and expensive, jewelers in the country, it specializes in platinum and silver jewelry set with stones. Gifts from Tiffany are readily identifiable by their characteristic blue box tied with a white ribbon.
